Expert Advice: Repair or Replace?

Deciding whether to repair or replace your Asko washer depends on several factors. Age is a key consideration. If your machine is over ten years old and requires a major repair, replacement might be more cost-effective in the long run. The type of problem also plays a role. Minor issues like a faulty door lock are usually worth repairing. However, extensive damage to the drum or motor could necessitate a replacement.

At Volt & Vector, we provide honest assessments and transparent pricing. Our technicians will carefully evaluate your Asko washer and recommend the most practical solution, whether it's a repair or a replacement. We prioritize your best interests and aim to get your laundry routine back on track quickly and efficiently.

Quick Checks Before You Call an Expert

1. Check the power cord: Ensure it's securely plugged into a working outlet.

2. Inspect the water supply hoses: Make sure they're tightly connected and not kinked or leaking. For your safety, turn off the water supply before checking.

3. Look for any error codes on the display: Note down the code for our technician, but do not attempt to interpret or fix it yourself.

4. Examine the door lock area: Gently check for any obvious obstructions. For your safety, unplug the appliance before proceeding.

5. Listen for unusual sounds: Try to pinpoint the source of any noise, but avoid disassembling the machine yourself.

Understanding Asko Error Codes

F1: Water isn't entering the appliance. Make sure the water supply valve is open and the inlet hose isn't kinked or blocked.

F2: The appliance is having trouble draining. Check the drain hose for kinks, blockages, or clogs.

F3: The door isn't locking properly. Make sure the door is completely closed and latched.

F4: The appliance isn't heating the water correctly. Please contact Volt & Vector for service.

F5: There's a problem with the motor or drum. Please contact Volt & Vector for service.

F7: The laundry load is unbalanced. Try redistributing the items inside the drum more evenly.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) ILVE burner clicks / doesn’t stay lit

Q: My ILVE gas burner clicks or won’t stay lit. Do I need a new range?
A: Almost never. This is usually a repair, not a replacement situation.

Most “clicks but no flame” / “flame goes out” problems on ILVE come from:

  • A worn or misaligned thermocouple / flame failure device
  • Blocked burner ports or debris in the burner head
  • A wet or dirty ignition electrode
  • A weak spark from a tired spark module

On a high-end brand like ILVE, a typical repair for this type of ignition issue usually falls in the $400–$1,200 range, depending on how many burners are affected and how hard they are to access. That is almost always far less than replacing the entire range and paying for new installation.

You should start thinking about replacement instead of repair only if:

  • The range is 20+ years old, and
  • You’re seeing multiple other problems (temperature issues, control problems, worn-out trim), and
  • You’re already planning a bigger kitchen update or remodel.

In every other scenario, fixing the ignition system is usually the smarter financial move.

2) ILVE oven slow to preheat / cooks unevenly

Q: My ILVE oven takes forever to preheat and doesn’t hold temperature. Is this normal for ILVE?
A: A slightly longer preheat can be normal for some ILVE models, but excessive preheat times or obviously uneven temperatures are not normal and usually point to a fault.

Common causes include:

  • A weak or failing bake/broil element (electric models)
  • A drifting temperature sensor or thermostat
  • A control board that is cycling elements prematurely
  • Heat loss through a worn or damaged door gasket

If you ignore it, you’ll fight with undercooked centers, burnt edges, and unpredictable bake times. A targeted repair (sensor, element, gasket or board) is typically much cheaper than “living with it” and then replacing the oven early. For most ILVE ovens, fixing the underlying problem is still usually under 25–40% of the cost of a full replacement + install, especially when you factor in cabinetry and trim.

3) ILVE oven not heating at all

Q: My ILVE oven stopped heating completely. Is it done, or can it be fixed?
A: In most cases, a dead ILVE oven is still repairable.

Typical root causes:

  • Failed bake or broil element
  • A bad control board or relay
  • A tripped or failed thermal fuse
  • A door lock / safety switch problem that prevents the oven from energizing

It can feel like a total failure, but the actual repair often comes down to one or two parts. Because ILVE is a luxury brand, the parts can be pricey and sometimes slow to arrive, but a successful repair can easily give you many more years of life out of the appliance.

Replacement usually only makes sense if:

  • The cost of parts + labor gets close to half the price of a new ILVE, and
  • The range is already older and showing multiple other age-related issues.

4) ILVE burners are hard to control / “all or nothing”

Q: My ILVE burner knobs feel like they’re either almost off or full blast. Is that a defect?
A: This is a very common complaint with ILVE and other European-style ranges. Part of it is simply how the gas valves and burner design are engineered — the usable flame adjustment window can feel much narrower than on many North American brands.

Sometimes, though, it’s made worse by:

  • Partial blockages in burner ports
  • Incorrect orifices after a gas conversion
  • Valve wear that makes fine control more difficult

If you’re fighting with every burner and you can’t get a stable low simmer at all, it’s worth having the system checked. In some cases, cleaning, adjustment, or replacing one or more valves can significantly improve control without replacing the range.

5) ILVE convection fan / oven lights not working

Q: My ILVE oven light or convection fan stopped working. Is this a big repair?
A: Not usually, but on a premium appliance it’s worth doing correctly.

Typical culprits:

  • A simple burned-out bulb (consumable)
  • A failed convection fan motor
  • A problem with the fan relay or control board
  • A wiring issue in the door, light housing, or control section

These parts do wear out over time, especially with heavy use and high temperatures. Replacing them restores visibility and proper air circulation, which is essential for even baking on a European-style oven. On a brand like ILVE, it’s better to address this early before heat buildup starts stressing other components.

6) ILVE is hard to clean / non-standard inside dimensions

Q: Why is my ILVE oven so hard to clean, and why don’t my old pans fit?
A: Two reasons:

  1. Interior design and materials — The way the racks, side supports, and enamel are built can make access to corners and edges more difficult than on some North American models.
  2. European dimensions — Many ILVE ovens have slightly smaller or differently proportioned cavities, so full-size American sheet pans and roasting pans don’t always fit the way you expect.

That’s not a defect, but it does mean:

  • You may need a different set of pans to really take advantage of the oven.
  • Deep cleaning is best done with the racks and side supports removed and, occasionally, with professional service if buildup has already hardened.

7) ILVE customer service, parts and warranty issues

Q: I keep reading that ILVE customer service is slow and parts take months. Is that true?
A: Many owners and reviewers report:

  • Slow or nonexistent responses from factory support
  • Difficulty finding a local service provider, especially outside large metro areas
  • Very long waits for parts in some cases (weeks to months)
  • Frustrations with third-party warranty providers, including delayed or “lost” claims

Because ILVE is a luxury Italian brand, many parts are special-order and ship from overseas or limited U.S. stock. This doesn’t mean your appliance can’t be fixed; it just means you want:

  • A technician who actually understands ILVE and is comfortable working with non-standard European designs
  • Clear communication up front about parts availability and realistic timelines

8) What ILVE parts most commonly fail or need replacement?

Q: What ILVE parts fail most often and end up being replaced?
A: ILVE shares a lot of the same weak points as other high-end ranges — just with more expensive parts.

The components we most often see needing attention are:

  • Ignition system components
    • Thermocouples / flame failure devices (burner won’t stay lit)
    • Ignition electrodes / plugs (weak or no spark)
    • Spark modules (intermittent or continuous clicking)
  • Heating and temperature control
    • Bake / broil elements on electric models
    • Temperature sensors / thermostats that start reading inaccurately
    • Main control boards that don’t respond properly or cycle heat incorrectly
  • Airflow and circulation
    • Convection fan motors that get noisy or fail
    • Cooling fans for electronics on some models
  • Doors, seals, and user-facing parts
    • Oven door gaskets that get brittle, tear, or stop sealing
    • Door hinges and latches on heavily used ovens
    • Burner heads and caps that wear or corrode
    • Control knobs and shafts that crack or strip
  • Lighting & consumables
    • Oven bulbs (normal wear items)
    • Some decorative trim that discolors or loosens over time

Because ILVE parts can be expensive and slow to arrive, it’s smart to address small symptoms early (weak burner, random clicking, temperature drift) instead of waiting until multiple components fail at once.

9) Is repairing an ILVE usually worth it?

Q: With all these complaints, is repairing my ILVE even worth it, or should I just give up and change brands?
A: In most NYC kitchens, repairing a relatively modern ILVE is still the smarter move:

  • You avoid the cost and disruption of removing a heavy, built-in Italian range, modifying cabinetry, and installing a new one.
  • Even with premium parts and labor, a well-planned repair is usually far below the cost of a new luxury range + install + possible carpentry.
  • Many chronic issues (ignition problems, temperature drift, noisy fans) are fully fixable, and once corrected, the appliance often runs reliably for years.

Replacement starts to make sense when:

  • The appliance is older, heavily worn, and has multiple systems failing at once, and
  • The total estimate is approaching half or more of the cost of a new unit, and
  • You are already considering a bigger kitchen update.

They came and did a very quick diagnostic for my dishwasher on the same day. Determined that the issue was fixable but needed an extra part ordered specifically for the issue. The repair was perfectly done. However Vlad when talking to him heard my fridge was having issues with temperature took a look and fixed the internal issues after looking at the wiring inside. Very good quality work and both the dishwasher and fridge are working perfectly.
