Unusual Appliance Noises: What They Mean — and When to Call
Author: Volt & Vector Service Team
Service area: Brooklyn & Manhattan (below 96th Street)
Safety first (gas). If you smell gas: do not switch anything on, do not relight. Leave the area and call your utility’s emergency line (Con Edison / National Grid). After the site is cleared, we’ll service the appliance.
Unusual sounds are early warning signs of wear. Catching them now prevents secondary damage to motors, pumps, fans, bearings, and control boards.
Rule of thumb: If the sound returns at the same stage (spin, drain, preheat, convection), it’s a component, not a fluke.
Observe → Hypothesize → Test → Fix → Verify
Result: Quieter cycles, correct heat/airflow, and less stress on motors, pumps, and boards.

Include your brand, model, a quick description of the noise and when it happens, plus any building access notes.
This guide is written from day-to-day NYC fieldwork across Bosch, Miele, Sub-Zero, Thermador, Liebherr, GE, Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, and others. It’s general information, not a substitute for on-site diagnostics—especially for gas. For legal details, see our Terms, Privacy, and Cookie pages.
