Refrigerator repair should begin with the temperature pattern, not a guessed part. A warm fresh-food section with a normally frozen freezer points in a different direction from both compartments warming together. Frost on one panel, water under the drawers, a fan noise, or an ice-maker leak each changes what must be inspected first.

Is This the Right Repair Page?
- Use refrigerator repair when the fresh-food section is warm, both compartments are unstable, the refrigerator leaks, runs constantly, frosts up, or makes a new mechanical noise.
- Use freezer repair for a standalone freezer or a clearly isolated freezer-temperature problem.
- Use ice maker repair when food temperatures are stable and the main complaint is ice production, dispensing, ice quality, or a leak at the ice system.
- Use wine cooler repair for a wine-storage unit with a zone-temperature or undercounter-airflow problem.
What the Symptom Changes
- Fresh-food section warm while the freezer remains cold: airflow between compartments, an iced air path, fan operation, damper behavior, sensor feedback, and door sealing become the first branches. This pattern does not prove that the compressor failed.
- Both refrigerator and freezer are warming: power, control state, condenser heat rejection, fan operation, defrost state, and cooling capacity must be separated. Record actual temperatures instead of relying only on how the cabinet feels.
- Heavy frost or ice on an interior panel: the location and shape of the frost help distinguish warm-air entry from a defrost or airflow restriction. Photograph it before defrosting because the pattern may disappear.
- Water under drawers or on the floor: the water path may involve a defrost drain, filter housing, supply connection, dispenser, ice maker, condensation, or a door that is not closing. The leak location and cycle timing matter more than the size of the puddle.
- New fan, rattle, buzz, or constant running: noise during door opening, compressor start, ice harvest, or fan operation points to different systems. A short recording is more useful than a part name.
Safe Checks Before Service
- Record the displayed and measured temperature in each compartment if an appliance thermometer is available.
- Confirm the doors close fully and that packages are not holding a door open or blocking an interior air outlet.
- Photograph frost, condensation, water location, display messages, and the model label if it is reachable without moving the refrigerator.
- Note whether the symptom followed a power outage, filter change, cleaning, door-left-open event, or recent installation work.
- Keep the doors closed as much as practical when cooling is failing and protect food according to current food-safety guidance.
For time-and-temperature decisions, use current USDA refrigeration guidance rather than smell, taste, or a guessed cabinet temperature.
Do not chip ice with a sharp tool, remove interior panels, pull a built-in refrigerator from cabinetry, disconnect a water line, or keep resetting the breaker. Those actions can erase evidence or create a refrigerant, water, electrical, floor, or cabinet problem.
When to Stop Using the Refrigerator
Stop use and address the immediate hazard first for a burning smell, smoke, sparks, repeated electrical trip, damaged cord, or water reaching an outlet or electrical area. Shut off the accessible appliance water supply if there is an active supply leak and it can be done without moving the unit. If food temperatures have risen, use an appliance thermometer and current USDA guidance; smell or taste alone cannot establish that perishable food is safe.
What Diagnosis Should Confirm
A useful visit verifies temperatures, frost distribution, door and gasket contact, fan operation, condenser condition, defrost behavior, sensor readings, control commands, water connections, and cooling performance as the model allows. Sealed-system work is not assumed from a warm cabinet; it becomes a branch only after airflow, defrost, controls, and heat rejection have been evaluated.
Built-in and panel-ready refrigerators also require an access plan. Send photos of the grille, toe-kick, cabinet panels, floor, and nearby walls, plus any COI, elevator, or service-hour requirements. Do not move the unit before the access and water-line path are understood.
